Nice to learn about this blog. It will be usefull to many adiyars and spiritual aspirants like me.

  2. kalyani Venkatesh Says:

Of all the various upanyasams/Kalakshepams of Our respected Swamy Sri U.ve.Krishnan avl, which we enjoyed was that, the most important and spelbounding one was VARADARAJASTHAVAM which he presented in Kanchipuram. We could not still forget the divinity and in fact by his discriptive explanations on the slogas of Sri Kooraththazhvan, he has brought the Divya thampathigal Lord Sri Perunthevi Nachiar and Sri varadarajar Swamy in our mind and play in the cradle of our heart. Eventhough adiyen attended for a direct discourse at Kanchi but still I enjoyed more by listening to the 4 CDs (gifted to us) with the feeling as if I am listening for the first time.Such is the speciality of his lecture. The marginal utility in the enjoyment of his lecture will not at all diminish unlike the material enjoyment we feel the diminishing utility. One should not miss to buy the CD and listen to that divine lecture and oobtain sacred anugram of Lord Sri Varadarajaswamy of Kanchi. Adiyen still wandering for more and more words to discribe about Swamy’s versatality.

    Namaskaram,

I am really very very happy to see such a blog for a great service. Seeing our Swamin itself, Reminds me of all our poorva-acharya’s. Now this techology helps me to keep in touch with all thondar kuzham. For which i feel, i am gifted.

  4. Sriram Says:

with reference to #2, I would also like to share that I enjoyed the Kamba Ramayanam and got deeply immersed in the nectar of Bhagavad Geeta. Never before have I read or listened to any discourse that so easily makes such difficult concepts understandable…

After one listens to Ramayana by Sri Swamy, the next logical step is the Geeta and adoptation of Saranagathi.

  5. kalyani Venkatesh Says:

Yes. I too agree to Mr.Sriram. The first upanyasam I listened (and enjoyed as well) at the first darshan of Swamy in the BAGAVATH GITA DISCOURSE during the year 2005 ,Margazhi month at Triplicane which I will never forget and the divinity I felt in that darshan.Just at random I wanted to attened to that lecture but after seeing him some sacred feeling cropped up in my mind which led me to attend to the whole 30 days lecture and till now I mostly never used to miss his lecture. Not only me but nobody should miss his discourse. Sometimes we used to wonder he might be an other amsam of Srimath Ramanujar or Lord Kannan or Srimath Nammazhwar. The discourse comes like a varshini. In fact, the very title “Bala Vagamrutha varshini ” rewarded to Swamy is only for the sake of Adiyar’s satisfaction No title can fulfil his versatality and dedicated and committed personality in his divine service to the humanity. Any title for that matter if garlanded with swamy will get more power and credit and not vice versa.

    Dhasan.

  6. Sriram Kumar.K. Says:

Not a day passes - always in the Morning - without listening to Swamy Sri U.Ve.Velukudi Krishnan swamy’s upanyasams on Bhagavat Gita, Thiruppavai and Vishnu Sahasranamam. Lord Krishna has chosen Swamy as the representative of all “Purvacharyas” for us to be blessed with and my humble pranams to him. Swamy’s service is beyond words and I think that he is “Kaliyuga Azhwar” taken “Avathar” to explain the greatness of all our Purvacharyas and spread their message.

  7. svenkatesan Says:

Recently Sh.U.Ve.Velukkudi krishnan swamigal concluded the Bhagwath githa-18th Chapter on 15th June 08. It was a wonderfuld experiance to have the discourse. we expect more and more from the Swamigal at Bangalore. I reside in Bangalore since 1993 and enrolled as a member of the trust recently. I wish to enrol as many people as I can shortly. Our family members have got lots of interest in listining to the discourses o Sh.U.Ve.Velukkudi Krishnan Swamigal. we have the CD collecation like, Alwargalum thiruvengadamum, sriranga mahatmiyam, srigunaratna kosam, Gadhyatrayam, paratvadi panchagam, sri bhagavatham. We sould be collecting all the required CDs in the coming future. Sh.U.Ve.Velukkudi Krishnan swamigal is nothing but the Krishna’s maru avataram who impart the Athiga neri in Sri Vaishnavas. I am certain that his holy services are utilised in a broad manner by the Sri vaishnavas.

  8. geethakannan Says:

I agree 100% about swamiji I take him to be my guru. and am trying to bring into my life and follow atleast a little of what he says when he visits our houses every morning at 6.30.
i am learning yoga philosophy as well as practice and other related subjects to become a theraupeutic yoga teacher from a reputed institution.
i have a query and i would be grateful if anybody would help me. Sukham and duhkham happens to purusa or prakrti? who is suffering or happy? purusa or prakrti? i understand that both go hand in hand and one cannot function without other.since vasanas are carried over, in that sense one could say purusa. but purusa is unaffected by anything.so do they feel the pain or suffering or happiness?

  9. R. Vaidhyanathan Says:

I have great pleasure in visiting this website and i am very grateful to be born in this world with persons like sri velukudi Krishnan.

I have no more words to describe the way that he presents the slogas everyday.

I thank sriman narayana for this wonderful opportunity to be in this world and hear the greatness of him.

Let the seva be continued with the Almighty’s wish

  10. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

I chanced upon your site and this blog while I was Googling your name. My parents live in India and they regularly attend your discourses in Madras, and subscribe to your CDs. They also had the good fortune to go on the Krishna Divyadesham tour that you organized.

They are now visiting me and my sister’s family here in California. They play your discourses all the time here.

Listening to these discourses taught me so many things that I was totally ignorant about. If it were not for your renderings I would have forever been oblivious to the trmendous wealth and richness of our SriVaishnava tradition. Up until now, I never made any sincere effort to explore my religion taking it at face value. I thank you for the great service you are doing. Now, not a day passes without listening to one of your discourses. Your discourses give me company everyday when I commute to work - its the only thing that I listen to these days - no NPR (National Public Radio), no music, nothing else, not even news, just your rich discourses. Every time I listen to them I discover new things that I somehow missed out earlier. I even go to sleep listening to your discourses with the earplugs still on. Thanks for everything.

  11. Srinivasa Raghavan Says:

    To answer your question -

Prakrti - It’s a Achit tattvam and does not feel anything. Bhagavan uses this for creation/destrution. It undergoes Swarupa and Swabhava Vikara.

Purusha - By referring atma it undergoes Swabhava Vikara only during the time it’s tied with prakrti. During this time, it feels the goods/bads of body because of Ahankara and Mamakara. However, Atma by nature is of Gnana Maya, Ananda Maya etc. Upon getting released from karma, it realizes it’s nature.

  12. Sriram Kumar.K. Says:

I would like to attend week end classes on learning Bhagavat Geetha and Vedas. Any suggestion or help on where they are conducted in Chennai ? Thanks and Pranams.

  13. Vidya Ramanujam Says:

I am an Iyengar and I currently live in US.
We are planning to come to India next year permanently.

I was raised by a simple middle class parents (iyengars), who performed daily niyamas.
My parents took care of my patty till her old age and lived an example life taking care of all the family members (brother, sister and their kids) within their means. But since we always had the confusion in our family about our acharyan, none of them had an opportunity to perform samasrayanam and my parents were never staunch about those things.

My inlaws (strongly believe in Vaishnavite niyamams) insist that me and my husband should get samasrayanam. My husband is the only son and my inlaws
believe that after their death, the karmas my husband will perform will not yield fullest satisfaction unless we do samasrayanam.

My husband is right now clueless and he has nothing for or against it. I have no second thoughts about doing anything to make my aged inlaws happy. But I am not convinced of the samasrayanam part. Not that I am scared of it. But, i believe that a person should perform niyamams with fullest belief and dedication. I dont want to do anything without knowing the reason behind it.

I would feel myself like an atheist goin to the temple with his shoes on.

i was raised by my parents with practical beliefs .
My mother never discriminated anybody by their caste, class or creed. She had a simple living and high thinking. My father was like the kaliyuga karnan who would give money/materials to other people even without the knowledge of mother(not that my mother would object).

Do you think my mother/father didn’t attain moksha because they dint perform samasrayanam? does god approve us becoz of the ritual we perform or by our thoughts and actions?

I understand that samasrayanam is an act (of a vishnu devotee) to prove that he is ready to offer/sacrifice himself and his body to go through anykind of test(physically). Frankly, are we that generous to control our mind and body?

    I need a convincing answer.

This is just one voice among many.

    thanks
    vidya.

  15. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Hello Smt. Vidya Ramanujam

I was also ignorant of our Sat Sampradaya until very recently. I am still learning.

Your in laws seem to be absolutely right here. If you really believe in the concept of Moksha as defined by our Acharyas, you should also accept that a Sri Vaishnava can only obtain Moksha by following the long chain established by the same Acharyas who gave you the concept. As far as I am aware, in this Kali Yuga, it is only through Samasrayanam and Bharanyaasam through a qualified Acharya that a Sri Vaishnava can obtain Moksha.

Please listen to both these links completely and make up your mind for yourself.

Also, in addition to this, according to Srimad Vedanta Desika, a Vadakalai like me, has only five words, not six. Vadakalais do not have ‘Anthima Smruthi Varjanam’ unless I keep re-affirming the Ashtakshara chant ‘Om Namo Narayanaya’ and the Dvaya Mantra chant ‘Sriman Narayana Charanau Saranam Prapadye, Srimate Narayanaya Namaha’ at the time of my death.

I am still learning too, so if someone can correct any mistakes here, I would be grateful.

  16. Ranganathan Says:

How there is a difference for Vadakalai evn in what Sriman Ramanujar has said- Anthima virajam - does it mean Vedanda Desikan differs with his Acarya paramparai. Is there is any site which gives details for Vadakalai to know such details?

    Adiyen - Krishnadasan (from Pune)

My 12 year old son does
Sandhya, Madhya and Sayam Sandaya on a regular basis. He knows by-heart
    - Amalanadipiran
    - Kanninum siruthambu
    - Pallandu
    - Thirupavai
    and
    - Sahasranama (partially)
But he is saying, he does all these because I am telling him to do this. He does without any involvement. I am not in a position to explain him the benefits of these. Can someone kindly help me please.

  18. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Hello Sri Ranganathan

    That’s what one would expect.

Apparently, the six words were not given by Sri Bhagavad Ramanujacharya. They were given by Sri Devanadha Perumal to Sri Tirukkachi Nambigal.

Unfortunately, there isn’t one, but innumerable places where I have encountered multiple differences between these two sub-sects in my recent searches - things I wasn’t aware of until very recently. All I knew a few days ago was the difference in the Thiruman style - U and Y.

  19. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

Once again, this is an extension to my reply to Sri. Ranganathan’s query on antimasmarana:

If there are people on this list who understand Sanskrit (and can read the verse below which is devoid of the appropriate accented characters), some of the differences are brought out in the following verse according to the book “Sri Vaishnavism - A Concise Study” by Sri. M.K.Srinivasan (on page 52 under General) in Chapter IX (pp 47-52)

“bhedah svamikrpaphalanyagatisu Srivyaptyupayatvayos tadvatsalyadayanirukticacasam nyase ca tatkartaraih,
    dharmatyagavirodhayoh svavihite nyasangahetutvayoh
    prayascittavidhau tadiyabhajane anuvyaptikaivalyayoh”.

  20. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Hello Sri.R. Krishnan

    That is really impressive.

    On Vishnu Sahasranamam:
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy in some of the discourses that I have listened to, explains this beautifully. He says, the property of fire is to burn anything that it comes in contact with. It does not distinguish between what it burns. Similarly, the property of Vishnu Sahasranamam is to do good to whoever recites or even listens to it. Vishnu Sahasranamam does not distinguish between people who understand its meaning, or people who recite it without knowing its meaning. Its property is to do good to whoever chants, or even listens to it.

    On Sandhyavandana:
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy explains at length that even though performing Sandhyavandanam is not going to bring you any good, if you stop doing it, you will start accumulating Bhagawan’s displeasure. Certain duties or karmas are prescribed in the Shastras. So these are duties that have to be performed whether you like it or not as prescribed in the Shastras.

Apparently, The Lord himself says in the Gita that the Vedas and Smritis are His own command. So, anybody who violates His command, by not doing these prescribed duties, will earn His displeasure. Sandhyavandana and other such prescribed duties are not accessories to Prapathi. However, they are duties prescribed in the Vedas and Sastras and because of that, they should be performed without fail throughout one’s life.

  21. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Hello Sri.R.Krishnan

A while back, I came across a site that has the meaning of each and every word, including commentaries on the Vishnu Sahasranama. Here’s the link to whoever is interested.
    http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivkuma/personal/music/vishnu-sahasranamam-meanings.htm

  22. Srinivasa Raghavan Says:

    Dear Bhagavatha - Vidya Ramanujam

I would like to give few examples to give clarity that our sastras are far advanced than latest science & our ancestors skill levels are far beyond our comprehension:

    a. Using advanced science mechanism nowadays, we are predicting Solar/Lunar eclipses a day in advance wherein Bhagavathas who writes Panchangam (for 1000s of yrs) predicts the same at the start of the Year. So, our knowledge is far advanced than modern science.

    b. The concept of Jiva different from the body is well explained in sastras. It can very well be proved using proper logical analysis. 1) If all the external organs are removed, feeling of “I” remains the same which means all external organs are not “I”. 2) Even mentally challenged persons, also have a feel of “I” . So, brain is also not. 3) Our Prana is not “I” because we are able to control (stop/breath) it using “I”. Science is yet to find a way here.

There are so many reasons to justify Saranagathi:

    1. Vedas (Upanishads) which are Aanadhi(ageless) prescribes two paths to attain Moksha. a)Bhakthi Yoga - is something where you strive and achieve (Sadyopaya). b) Saranagathi/Baranyasam. Saranagathi is a not a new born concept, it’s ageless. In fact, Nyasam is defined as the highest of all Yogas. Saranagathi is praying the god & make him stand in the place of Bhakthi and give the fruit (Siddopaya).

    2. Krishna in Bhagavad Gita prescribes Bhakthi Yoga & Saranagathi as two means of moksha. One cannot perform bhakthi yoga directly and needs to finish the first level Karma Yoga or Gnana Yoga. Upon attaining some perfection only, he can start bhakthi yoga. Bhakthi is defined as “continuous meditation on god without any disturbance - as how oil flows”. This is very difficult to practice in Kaliyuga.

    3. Our acharyas refer Ramayana as a Saranagathi Kavyam as there so many from beginning to end.

It’s really important for us to understand the rule of GAME created by Bhagavan. Once we understand & adher to the rules, we WIN the game.

    4. Saranagathi creates a BONDAGE between this soul and swami Ramanuja. Once we know about our Swami, we can easily understand how easy is to attain moksham.

    Greatness of Swami Ramanuja:

His greatness is far beyond our words…

    a. Swami is the avatara of adisesha. He has come down from Srivaikunta to uplift us.

    b. Namperumal has given both the vibuthis (nithya & leela) to Swami Ramanujar. That’s why he has been named as “Udayavar”.

    c. NammAlwar has given Swami Ramanuja’s vigraham to Madhurakavi Alwar and referred him as “Bhavishyad Acharyar” at the beginning of kali. Even today, you can have darshan of swami’s vigraham at Thirukurungudi.

    d. Kanchi Deva Perumal has given 6 words to Swami thro Thirukkachi Nambi out of which one is “Upayeshu Prapathisyat - means Saranagathi is the way for moksha”

    e. During swami’s time on Boologa, he has given a letter for moksha to the milk supplying women for his ashram. Tirupathi perumal has given her direct moksham.

    f. Important point to note “Swami Ramanuja has done Saranagathi to Namperumal using Saranagathi Gadyam”. Namperumal & Thayaar speaks to him and says Moksham is given to You & Your Sambandhis.

There are so many instances to site from Swami’s Life. Swami has carefully planned to help the future by nominating 74 acharyas. Their descendants (Guru parampara) is still continuing & for ever. It’s important for us to attain their lotus feet and perform Saranagathi. Belief is very important as it’s one of the angas in saranagathi “Maha Vishwasa Pooravakam”.

    Adiyen
    Ramanuja Dasan - Srinivasa Raghavan

  23. Srinivasa Raghavan Says:

Dear Bhagavatha - Suresh Raj Gopalan

Six commandments from Deva Perumal is applicable for both the sects which implies Antima Smrithi Varganam is for all saranagathas (both vadagalai and thengalai). The difference is on the angas of prapatti. Both of us have 5 angas a. Aanukulyesya Sankalpam b. Praathikulyesya Varjanam c. Rakshishyathiti Vishvasam d. Gopthrutva Varnam e. Karpanyam. One more angam for thengalai is Aatma Nikshepam.

  24. Srinivasa Raghavan Says:

    Dear Bhagavatha - Krishnan

Adiyen is happy to see that you have come up with a right question at a right time which every parent needs to do bring up a Srivaishnavite. In many cases, parents don’t give convincing answers or ignore these Q which makes the child loose interest on our traditional values.

We can give surfacing answers like Good health, prosperity, memory power etc which are true but is not sufficient. Additionally, it’s important to clarify these doubts in depth. Nowadays, children have sharp brilliance and quick grasping power. Would like to suggest few options which can be tried:

    1. Make him understand the concept of Karma by explaining the differences in society starting plant, animals, humans - rich, poor, healthy, diseased etc. To burn karmas, he should do everything with interest.

    2. There are 9 relations between jivatma and paramatma out of which a) Father & Son b) Friend are important in this context. When he does something to his father/friend, it should be with love and affection.

    3. Tell him the story of Ramayana & Mahabaratha by combining in depth meanings in it. Make him listen to swamy cd’s on these areas. Ask for doubts and clarify regularly.

    4. It’s important to share the story of our Alwars & Purvacharyas Swami Nammalwar, Ramanujar, Koorathalwan etc.

    5. Slowly educate him on the differences between body and the soul which means less importance to be given to the body.

    6. We should be doing everything as kaimkaryam that will take this soul closer to paramatma.

    7. If there are any vaishnavite classes/schools available, he can spend time in weekends.

    8. Make him participate in temple festivals and develop his interest on Archa Vigrahams.

    9. Feed him with basic books on vaishnavism.

    Adiyen
    Ramanuja Dasan

  25. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Dear Sri. Srinivasa Raghavan

Thanks a lot for the clarification.

I am still trying to learn all the technical terms and their associated meanings.

After I saw your post, I am now continuing my search on what these Angas mean, and I came across this.

Here’s what I looked up just now and thought I’d mention it for other newbies like me who are still trying to learn all this:
    http://www.ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/dec2001/0075.html

The five angas of prapatti are:
    1. Anukoolya sankalpam (determination to act /do what pleases the Lord)
    2. prAthikoolya varjanam (refrain from acts that displease and cause displeasure for the Lord)
    3. KaarpaNyam (feeling of humility arising from helplessness in resorting to other means of salvation (Bhakti Yogam))
    4. MahAviswAsam (absolute, unshakeable faith in Lord as the SOLE PROTECTOR)
    5. Goptrtva varaNam- making a request to the Lord seeking his protection)

Athma nikshEpam - entrusting the burden of protection of the individual self to the care of the Lord- is considered to be the angi, while the five are called angas. Athma nikshepam- act of self surrender is included and is called as six fold discipline in Ahirbudhnya smahithA, while Lakshmi Tanthra while defining Athma nikshepam, (also known as Saranagathi or nyAsam) speaks of five components (nyAsa pnachAnga samyutha). There is however no conflict between the two. In Ahirbudhnya samhitha Athmanikshepam is included with the five; while Lakshmi thanthram separately mentions it.

  26. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

Just so newbies do not end up with the same confusion between the Six Commandments (words) and the 5+1 Angas, I am listing the Six Commanments as given by Sri Deva Perumal To Sri Thirukkachi Nambigal here:

The Basic Six Words that define Visishta-Advaita according to Brahmam:

    1.Ahameva Paramtatvam – Sriman Narayan is the Supreme-most God/ Supreme-most Being – the Supreme-most Principle/Supreme-most Truth.
2.Darishanam Bedayevacha – Individual jeevathmas (souls) are different from Sriman Narayana – the Brahmam and the Paramatma, but are a part of the Brahmam. Sriman Nayana and souls are different (Bheda).
3.Upayayeshu Prapathischaath – Prapatti (surrender) is the means to attain salvation. By faith and surrender alone shall anyone reach Sriman Naraya, their only salvation.
4.Antimastriti Varjanam – Last remembrance of Sriman Narayana on the part of the departing soul is NOT necessary once he has undergone Parapathi atleast once in his lifetime. Thought of Brahmam at the time of death is NOT compulsory.
5.Dehavasane Muktisyaath – Moksha can be obtained only on laying off the mortal body. Release from bondage (Moksha) follows immediately on death.
6.Poornaacharya Samashraya – One must undergo SamashrayaNam as soon as possible from a qualified SriVaishnava Acharya. Choose Mahapurna as your spiritual teacher (Acharya)

  27. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

This is in reference to Sri. Srinivasa Raghavan’s reply to Sri. Krishnan.

I did not know the nine types of relationships that is mentioned, and so I started searching for it. Here’s what I found. I am writing for any newbies like me who also want to know what these nine types of relationships are.

In PERUMAL THIRUMOZHI ANUBHAVAM, Kulasekara Azhvar says that Sriman Narayana is The Supreme Lord and that He alone is the Sharanya who can grant salvation.

In the fifth decad, Kulasekara Azhvar expresses the nine types of relationships that exist between the Jiva (individual Soul) and the Paramathma (Lord Sriman Narayana).

The Nava Vidha Sambandham (nine different types of relationships) that exists between the Lord and the Jeevathma can be identified in these ten songs:

    1. Father-Son (Pitha-puthra)
For instance in the verse “tharu thuyaram thadAyEl”, Pitha-puthra (Father-son) relationship is described.

    2. Husband-Wife (Barthu-Barya)
Then by the Verse “Kanntarikazvan” the Barthu-Barya relationship is described. Lord Sriman Narayana is the Purshottaman and all the jivas assume the role of wife for this Purushottaman , this is because He is one who, as the head of the family protects the family and we the jivas being dependent on Him are the wives of the Supreme Lord.

    3. Protector-Protected (Rakshya-Rakshaka)
By the verse “Meeneku NeenVayal” the relationship of Rakshya-Rakshaka is expressed. He alone is the Rakshakan (Protector) and we are the one who are protected.

    4. Physician-Patient (jnyanathru-jnyeya)
In the verse “Vannalarruthu”, the Lord is described as the physician who cures the diseased Jiva. (jnyanathru jnyeya).

    5. Sustainer-Sustained (Adhara-Adhera)
In the verse “Vengan Tin kaliru”, the Adhara-Adhera relationship is described. Sriman Narayana is the cause for the sustenance of the entire universe and we the jiva depend on Him for our sustenance

    6. Sun-Lotuses (Bogya-Bogthrutva)
Then by the verse “Senthazhale vandhu” Sriman Narayana is described as the Sun and the jiva as the lotus which blooms on seeing the sun. The Bogya-Bogthrutva bhavam is conveyed.

    7. Clouds-Grains (Sharira-Atma)
In “Ethannai Van” Sriman Narayana is described as the clouds and the Jiva is described as the grains which depend on the clouds for its growth. Thus it is understood that Sriman Narayana is the cause for the survival of the jiva. Sharira-Atma Bhavam is conveyed by above.

    8. Seshan-Seshi
Then by the verse “thokkilangiyar” Lord is described as the Seshan and the jiva as the seshi . The total dependence of the Jiva on the Paramathma is conveyed. Sesha-Seshi Bavam.

    9. Owner-Owned
Then by the verse “Ninnayathan Vendi, Swa Swami relationship is conveyed . We the jiva are the wealth and the Lord, is the owner of the wealth.

Thus in the entire decad Kulasekara Azhvar had established the Jivatma Paramathama Sambandham (relationship between the jiva and supreme soul).

If there are any mistakes, please correct me.

  28. Krishna Says:

    Dear Smt. Vidya Ramanujam,
Your thoughts ring a bell in me. Till three years ago, I was thinking along those lines till Perumal corrected me.

Simple living, pure thoughts, helping the needy, etc that you mentioned about your family are laudable. All these will lead to Moksham …… but at some point …..after several births… by Hari’s grace (if HE wills).

Hari also says in Gita ”
Partha ..but these are what the materialistic “deham or sareeram” does to satisfy itself of its purposeful existence.

Pure thoughts and simple living are the beginning steps in the karma yoga. Already your parents are old now and they are still satisfied just with the begining steps in karma yoga. Your people have to then advance to Gnana yoga to attempt understand the Parabrahman.
Even the four-headed Brahma or Sivan or demi Gods could not comprehend HIM (Gita purports). What about us? Hence pursuit of Gnana yoga as an end by itself will be daunting.

With this advancement in karma yoga, they need to get to Bhakthi yoga. But each and every step of this hiearchical approach is full of failings (remember the the paramapadam game that we play during childhood using a map with snake figures..? we fall and raise….)

Our Azhwars found that the soul cannot even execute the bhakthi yoga perfectly.
Hence, following Sri Hari’s command in Gita, our poorvacharyas (azhwars and Ramanuja and countless perceptors) suggested a simple way: surrender (prappatti).

For this, there is no need to introspect whether one is eligible or mature, etc. Even if one wants to wait till that eligibility is attained, what scale one can use to measure his/her eligibility? In kaliyuga, every thing is tainted (including our brain that is composed of the 5 inferior things which you use to infer your readiness). So one will keep waiting forever to self-certify that he/she has attained grade to approach for prapatti.

A snake did not wait to ask for prappatti when pursued by Garuda. A rakshaha did not wait to purify himself to approach for prappati. Why are you, a human, waiting?

As other enlightened souls in the forum suggested, approach an Acharyan quickly and perform Prappatti. That’s the only way to cross this samsara.

I pray that SriHari’s grace will enable this to happen quickly for your family.

    dAsan,
    Krishna

    Madam Sri Vi9dhya Ramanujam

Being graceful , grateful and pious attitude are not by teaching but it is an ancestral quality. The practical belief working out well is only to some extent possible for living peacefully in this material world. The money attainment and all are only for the material world but for Athma parisuthi and Athmasakshathkaram one should have an acharya sampantham. Lord Srimannarayana has entrusted the power to Srimath Ramanujar for the attainment of Moksham by any jeevathma (caste no bar for moksham) but should have done panchasamskaram /samasrayanam from their respective acharyan. So if you do not know to seek Acharyan for this samasrayanam programme, after you return from US kindly contact SRIMATH VANAMAMALAI JEEYAR for this glorious function and get samasrayanam. This is only my humble opinion. In this connection you please further consult Swamy Velukkudi Krishnan. He will givie suitable and apt suggestions to you.

Why I am insisting is that in our srivaishnava sampradhayam, a person only with panchasamskaram becomes srivaishnavites without which even if is a vishnu baktha only called as a vaishnavite. That much power to that ACHARYA SAMPANDHAM. Kindly recall the upanyasam of our Swamy on the subject 6 words by Thevapiran(Lord Sri Varadharajar) to Thirukkachchi Nambigal . Even for himself when he finally pleaded to Lord for Moksham, Lord Thevapiran uttered emphatically to seek any acharyan through which only an athma can attain moksham for avoiding any rebirth in this mundane world.

In my case, I too had a belated opportunity for that glorious divine connection. We can even say that after getting samasrayanam we the athma is wedded to Lord Srimannarayana. Samasrayanam is a mangala soothra and a token of acceptance as an elitiblity to reach near paramathma through our sampradhaya Acharya. But after the launchanam of sanga and chakra , we should follow to the best extent possible about the rules as prescribed by our Acharyans. Then only Lord will be happy to give moksham after leaving the sthula sareeram.

Mysincere advice is that you do not miss this opportunity to seek an achryan. You pray for Srimath Ramanujar for getting this golden chance. I had a lot of changes in my mind, action and thinking what not only after samasrayanam.I just cried for this with Lord whenever I feel distress. But after I had a darshan of Srimath Emperumanar(Srimath Ramanujar) at Sriperumboothur and with his blessings I got this golden opportunity. You will also say your experience in future about this.

    I pray Lord for you.

Pl pardon me if I say anything wrong.

If one has strong beleif, one should just follow and accept the elders without questioning because they are meant for lokakshema. Our Vishistdwaita siddhantam is not limited only just within our community, it is Universal and one can understand it with ease when we hear our swami delivering upanyasam. Dear Smt.Hema Kuppuswamy

    I have a different view.

Up until very recently, I blindly followed our Sat Sampradaya without understanding its inner meanings. After being introduced to the richness of our Sri Vaishnava philosophy by listening to some of the Upanyasams of Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy, I want to explore the hidden meanings that I was unaware of up until now.

People learn by asking questions. I am sure there are a zillion other people like me who do not live in India who would like to get clarifications from such great erudite scholars in person, but are not able to.

Resources like this blog help people like us in our quest to explore our rich tradition and learn by asking questions and interacting with other Bhagavathas.

Since I am not able to send this feedback, I am blogging this msg.

Dear Swami, I am a regular listener of Devareer’s upanyasams and really admire the way you render them. The clarity of thoughts in the subject conveyed just amazes me, the matter reaches even a lay person like me who hardly knows anything about SriVaishnavism. Whatever little I know today, it is because of you swami ji. In Dwapara Yuga, Lord Krishna imparted the knowledge of Gita to just one Arjuna and that too in the yudha bhoomi. However, Kali Yuga Krishnan (ie, Devareer) is imparting the knowledge of the Gita to millions of ignorants lilke me. Also, Bhagavan Krishna only uttered the Slokas but devareer is blessing us with its meaning too. This kainkaryam of yours goes to prove your strong will to spread the Sanatana Dharma far and wide in this World. I want to give my mangala anusasanams (as you always say) to you saying “Pallaandu, Pallaandu, Un sevadi sevvi thirukkaappu”. Respected Sri Suresh Raj Gopalan,

I completely agree with your thoughts of questioning and knowing things. What I meant to express is when we have the necter in our hand[like nallayaram padi, malavalamamunis commentaries etc] why go searching for churning it?Our purvacharyas had worked hard to give us the easy and condensed form of High Philosophy and meaning of Precious granthas and purvacharyas works. And above all we have our Swami’s spellbounding upanyasam to treasure and understand. Sampradayam is to be kept alive and healthy. These days there is no LOC for debate. Smriti and Shruti are not spared. Qestioning SriRamayan and Mahabharata is something which i feel can be kept out.

Yes questioning for knowing unknown facts are always welcome provided the thoughts and thirst for knowing is like yours.I have read previous wonderful comments and explanations from you here:),thankyou for the same

    Priya bhagavadhas

Adiyen has humble opinion about your discussions as above and clearcut clarifications by Mrs. Hema Kuppuswamy and adiyen fully agree with her.

As she has rightly pointed out that just because many of srivaishnavites not being aware of the facts of srivaishnavism and the various poorvacharyas divine explanations , God has entrusted the entire work to our beloved great Sri U.Ve Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy who is throughly clarifying everybody’s doubt and elaborately as well as in a comprehensive, simple way presenting poorvacharyas grantha details etc. Then instead of wasting our precious time in deep question, it is better to follow what our swamy preaches to us which is also an authenticated way.Because, he is following poorvacharyas granthas only for our behalf. It is really boon for us.

If we keep on thinking in the questions we will ultimately loose precious timings given by God.

The so called million people if they listen to swamy’s upanyasams atleast from Podhigai (gitaprogramme)all the doubts will be cleared fully.

My humble opinion and also request is instead of deep discussions in questioning session, we the the bhagavadhas can have discussions more about divyadesa peruman’s delightful darshan, his kalyana gunangal, etc and our experience if any, that will make our Lord happy and with his anugraham everything will come to our mind perfectly.

Our sampradhayam methods can be understood from our Swamy’s explanations itself. With that we can sit and think ourselves as to what are the types of god’s gunas and what are our dhoshangal(our sinful activities) and how it can be corrected by our self analysis so as to make our God still nearest to us.

Sorry for any wrong sayings by me.

I found sites that carry all the Upanyasams of Swami that are telecast on this Podigai TV Channel online. One of them is eSnips.

My earlier comment dated August 27th is awaiting moderation which contains the actual URLs that I found Googling for it.

In the interim, anyone interested can get to all these Upanyasam telecasts if you Google for it yourself.

The search term I used on Google to get at them was “Podigai AND Gita AND Velukkudi AND Krishnan” without the quotes.

Emperuman’s Thiruullam wanted Sri Veda vyasar to convey Universal messages in various divine works. Hence he wrote Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana and few other books. We all are aware that human being has to and goes through Rajas , Tamas and Satvika gunas during his life span. Veda vyasar too was going through his Tamasa guna while he was writing this great Epic. Hence it is not recommended for us to read at home. He wrote Sri Vishnu Purana while he was passing through Satvika guna. Hence it is considered very holy and sacred. That is why we all read it with great faith and devotion. Dear Smt.Hema Kuppuswamy, and Sri.Kalyani Venkatesh

If we really have to follow what is said in your posts, none of us should watch any television or movies, or listen to any radio, or read any newspapers or magazines or fiction, for all that we come across in the media today are much more sinister than what we read in the Mahabharatha. How many of us can afford to avoid all this these days?

  49. kalyani venkatesh Says:

Thanks you Mrs.Hema Kuppuswamy for clarifying the doubt about listening or reading Mahabaratha story.

With regard to the reply posts of Mr.SureshRajagopalan, I would like to mention that we cannot take the whole into granted and nobody is prevented from watching tv or movie. The crux of the point is that,at this modern juncture already there are quarrelsome serials are coming and some of us are even forced to listen or watch that and as you said they as much more sinister and all.Ok agreed. But in recent days, though tv is showing so many unwanted stories telecast,we have the right to use out of our god gifted analytical b rain, can definitely avoid watching and prefer an alternative one. In fact in my case before listening swamy’s upanyasam adiyen often used to watch tv serial(only selective), and cinema etc but after listening to Swamy’s upanyasams, I fully avoided that instead I preferred an alternative by hearing Audio CD of Swamy’s so many upanyasams for which time is very short also.

But in Mahabharatha being a great epic wherein as Madam Hema pointed out that because in thamasa nature the epic is written,we avoid that but reading the vishnu puranas out of that. Same is the case of tv also. That is why even our Swamy also used to insist, with the precious panchendriyangal which are given only for the usage but we can spend that for a good purpose. The very word inspired me and so I followed that . Now I am so peaceful with listening good stories of Alwars and Acharyas.

This is only adiyen’s humble suggestion or opinion. If any wrong sayings give it back to me and if good let it goes to God.

There are so many instances I can quote when I wanted to have darshan of God.
Take the case of Srirangam’s beautiful Namperumal who is Prime God.Many of you would have worshipped. Swamy used to say that when we see namperumal his sacred thiruppavalam looks like as if he wants to say something to Bakthas by smiling with a gesture. That is defenitely true. Dear Mr Suresh Rajagopalan,

Sorry for delated thanks reply since now only I could enter into this forum.

Any way, thanks a lot for submitting swamy’s upanyasam(foreign tour) link which I h ave downloaded. It is so nice. Just as his tamil upanyasam wit vagamrudham so also in english also our Swamy is a english vagamrudhavarshini. That is what I can say. In fact we do not fine time to listen to his upanyasams since we have received a super (ever)gift as THIRUMALAI CDS which is a real divine treasure as far I(so also all the adiyars)am concerned. So since I am listening to thirumalai, only a piecemeal of english lecture I could listen. We cannot fully describel his greatness. Is it not so? But is that the same as the one mentioned in the site as download?Pl clarify that.

Dear Sri Suresh Raj Gopalan, Much thanks to you for keeping this blog site alive with many useful information. Adiyars like you are the backbone of any efforts we take in our website. As you are aware, the upanyasam CDs of swamy are copyrighted by the trust and hence ideally should not be available for free downloads. While it is not easy to curb such copyright violations, as members we can do our bit by not encouraging such downloads. Apart from copyright violations, an important side-effect of copyright violations is that discourses when available for free will indirectly result in less membership enrollments and hence a bit less kainkaryam to emperman and His adiyars. Hence I request all the members to discourage piracy wherever they come across the same. And thanks once again for spending a lot of your time in keeping this blog alive. Regards, Administrator

  80. Suresh Raj Gopalan Says:

    Dear Admin

I wasn’t aware of this or I wouldn’t have posted these details. Can you please delete my posts that provide links to such downloads. I will also remove all the links from the ramanuja.wetpaint.com wiki that I created to track the same from over the web. I can’t remove my comment posts related to the downloads from this blog myself since I do not have sufficient privileges, but you can. Can you please do the needful?

  81. admin Says:

    Dear Sri Suresh Raj Gopalan,
Thanks for your immediate action. I have deleted the posts regarding the free downloads. However please note that Swamy’s US upanyasams are free downloads and there are no copyright issues on these upanyasams. Hence you can continue to post messages regarding swamy’s upanyasams and their availability. I appreciate and thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.

    Dear Sri Sadagopan

Do you watch any Television at home? Do you read or listen to News at home? Do you read any magazines or fiction at home? If you do, then I don’t find anything wrong in reading the Mahabharatha at home too.

Mahabharatha is one of the only two Itihasa gems of Uttara Mimamsa (Vedanta).

It was written for people to read and understand and learn from it.

Therefore, in my opinion, one can definitely read it.

But that is just my opinion.

    Dear Sri Sadagopan,

Pl find below my humble opinion. If there are any errors, shamikka prarthikirane.

Mahabharatha is called as “Bharata Panchomo Veda:” (fifth veda). Sage vyasa was not happy after writing this great epic because it talks about so many things & Bhagavat Guna. So, he has given a master piece to us- Bhagavatham.

Reading Mahabaratham at home should not be a problem as it involves understanding the epic which is important for every Sri Vaishnava. However,Parayanam is different from Reading (think the confusion is here only). From a parayanam perspective, Bharatam is not entertained because of above reason. Normally, our Sishtas used to perform Sri Ramayana Parayanam at home on a daily basis.

    Srimate Ramanujaya Namaha
    Respected Bhagwadas

I agree with what Sri Srinivas Raghavan mentioned about Parayana and Reading of great Epic. Yes Sri Ramayana Parayana is recommended where as Mahabharata is always told as stories to kids to know what to do and what not to. Only thing one should always bear in mind is that our purvacharyas and elders never say anything without any reason. We can have our individual views and follow, but the main sampradayam should remain alive.
